Wal-Mart energy-saving lamps: sales hit a new high

As the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart's sales target for energy-saving lamps this year is twice as high as last year, which is part of its green policy. Environmentalists and producers acknowledge that the demand for energy-saving light bulbs has grown substantially across the country under Wal-Mart's efforts. Supporters, including the US Environmental Protection Agency, believe that compressed fluorescent lamps consume only one-third of the power of ordinary incandescent lamps, and have a 10-fold longer lifespan. The entire life cycle of an energy-saving lamp can save more than $30.

Noah Horowitz, a senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said that about 150 million compact fluorescent lamps were sold nationwide last year. This year's sales volume is likely to double, thanks to Wal-Mart's contribution.

According to Philips Lighting, a subsidiary of Royal Philips Electronics NV, the ratio of energy-saving lamps installed in bulb outlets in North America to conventional bulbs is nearly 10%. But this figure has improved a lot compared to less than 2% three years ago.

Andrew Ruben, director of Wal-Mart's environmental affairs department, said that Wal-Mart's efforts to achieve this goal are inseparable from their efforts to continuously guide consumers' consumption awareness and reduce bulb prices.

Wal-Mart has reduced the price of its suppliers' energy-saving lamps by nearly half. A fluorescent lamp equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent lamp is now only sold for $1.65, compared to $2 to $40 a year ago. They expanded the display space on the shelves and also promoted, advertised, or advertised at other events in the store.
