Last week, Xing Tonghe's two architectural sketches, "The Original Rhyme," were published.
The sketch witnessed his work history, reflected his creative pursuit, and left many good memories of him. It also reflected the earth-shaking changes in Shanghai's urban construction since the reform and opening up in China, especially in the past 15 years. A few days ago, the reporter went to the interview and listened to him about his insights into architectural art and architectural culture.
Building is a rooted, living tree
Q: Where is your creative inspiration coming from?
A: Architecture is an aesthetic symbol of the city. It can also be said to be an aesthetic element. The outline of the city depends on a piece of grass and a piece of greenery can not be constructed. The outline of the city should be constructed by architecture, because the building itself represents history and culture. I often say that architecture is a tree with roots and life. The root is regional, and the root of Chinese architecture is the traditional culture of the Chinese nation. Architecture will be limited by the times and materials, but its culture is inseparable; the life of architecture is its technological content and the spirit of the times. The combination of the two is the source of my creation.
Jinmao Tower is an example. Its whole is a Chinese-style pagoda with a high morale. The height of the western super-tall buildings is equal, and the Chinese pagoda will receive a certain distance, and there is a sense of music. Jin Mao has absorbed this feature. Looking at Jinmao from different perspectives, even if it is partially obscured by other buildings, it can still see its rhythm; at the same time, it is deformed and not completely a tower. Therefore, it is both traditional and innovative.
When designing the Shanghai Museum, I thought about it. What kind of architectural shape should I use to express Shanghai's modern atmosphere and the functional orientation of the museum? The final decision was taken from the traditional culture of the “Tianyuan Placeâ€. This is not only the ancient Chinese's understanding of the world, but also the theoretical basis of traditional Taoist philosophy, containing a large number of historical elements and information; and Fangheyuan is a typical geometric figure, and is the most commonly used architectural symbol in modern minimalist architecture. The combination of the two not only reflects the functional positioning of the museum, but also organically combines with the surrounding buildings of the People's Square, and also reveals a strong atmosphere of the times.
Mr. Wen Yiduo once commented that there are three beautiful buildings in China: music beauty, poetry beauty and sculpture beauty. Architecture is actually a living time and space, a living stage and a living history. When I create each building, I always hope to achieve the combination of these three beauty, and the difficulty of architectural creation is also here.
