This week, Apple’s patent on facial recognition technology using depth of field map information was approved by the USPTO, and this patent is likely to be used on the new generation of iPhones debuted at the end of this year.

This patent has a patent number of 9589177. The patent is entitled "Use of depth of field to enhance face detection". Through a computer vision system, face recognition is performed using specialized hardware and software, especially face data that has been saved in a database.

Part of this patent comes from Apple’s PrimeSense motion capture company, which was acquired by Apple in 2013. In the past few years, many of PrimeSense's patents have been applied sequentially by Apple, including 3D mapping and 3D virtual keyboards.

According to the patent description document, Apple mentioned the method of detecting the face in the digital video stream using depth information. In a scene, if there are multiple people, the face can be identified based on the distance of different people from the distance of the lens.

To reduce the error rate, the system applies depth information to the face detection algorithm used in existing photography and intelligently scales the facial window size based on the depth coordinate of the face window—that is, the farther the face is from the lens, the smaller the surrounding capture frame.

This method uses special infrared rays to project the light pattern onto the scene and then convert it into a depth map. Although the system is able to identify most of the faces, it lacks the ability to recognize the differences between individual faces, so this is not the biometric solution itself, but it can be a key implementation step in a broader authentication system.

According to the news, Apple will develop a "revolutionary" front-facing 3D camera system for the iPhone 8. In order to achieve 3D perception, Apple will adopt three modules. It is unclear whether this patent today belongs to one of them, but this upgraded PrimeSense logic algorithm camera system is indeed a very critical technology.

Although it is not yet clear whether Apple will actually use this technology in future products, similar technologies will appear on the new iPhone that will debut in the second half of the year. Previously, analyst Guo Mingyi from KGI said that Apple will use the 3D camera system on the iPhone 8 of this year's OLED screen. With the integrated infrared transmitter and receiver device, Facetime can also fulfill various tasks, including biometric authentication and Games and more.

This apple face recognition technology patent was filed for the first time in March 2015. The patent inventors were Yael Shor, Tomer Yanir, and Yaniv Shaked.
