The current measurement function of a clamp multimeter is based on a current transformer and the internal measuring circuit of the meter. The transformer's core includes a movable part that is connected to a handle. When using the device, push the handle to open the movable iron core. Insert the wire you want to measure into the jaws, then release the handle to close the core. At this point, the wire passing through the core acts as the primary winding of the transformer, inducing a current in the secondary winding. The magnitude of this induced current depends on the actual current in the wire and the number of turns in the secondary coil. The ammeter is connected across the secondary winding, so it displays the current flowing through it, which is proportional to the current in the primary. This allows the meter to show the current value on the primary side by using a calibrated scale. When using the clamp meter, set the range switch to the appropriate current setting. Hold the meter body, press the switch with your thumb to open the jaws, insert the wire into the center of the core, and then release the switch. The iron core will automatically close, creating an alternating magnetic field in the core. The current value is then displayed on the meter, making it easy to read directly. Before using a digital multimeter, it is essential to read the instruction manual carefully. Familiarize yourself with the power switch, limit switch, input jacks, sockets, and various function keys and accessories. Understand the multimeter’s limits, overload display features, polarity indication, low voltage warning, and other indicator alarms. Also, learn how the decimal point position changes during measurements. Before each measurement, check that the range switch is set correctly and that the right input jack (or dedicated jack) is selected. When taking a measurement, the meter may initially show fluctuating values. Wait until the reading stabilizes before recording it. Although digital multimeters have built-in protection circuits, it is still important to avoid mistakes such as measuring voltage with the current range, measuring resistance or current with the voltage range, or testing charged capacitors with the capacitance range. These errors can damage the meter. If only the highest digit shows "1" while the others are blank, it means the meter is overloaded. In that case, select a higher range. Avoid switching the range while measuring voltages above 100V or currents above 0.5A, as this can cause arcing and damage the switch contacts. There is a hazard symbol next to the input jacks, indicating the maximum voltage or current allowed. Exceeding these limits can damage the instrument or pose a risk to the user. Clamp meters should never be used to measure current on high-voltage lines. The tested voltage should not exceed the specified level (typically 500V or less) to prevent insulation failure and electric shock. Estimate the current before measuring and choose the correct range. Never use a small range to measure large currents. Always ensure the range switch is set to the AC current position before measuring. Do not use the voltage or resistance range to measure current, and vice versa—this can easily damage the meter. Only one wire should be clamped at a time. Place it in the center of the jaws to improve accuracy. It's best to flatten the wire with your hand to prevent it from touching the jaws or the meter body. After completing the measurement, turn the range switch to the highest voltage setting and then turn off the power. This ensures safe storage and readiness for the next use.
