As Ethernet and communication technologies continue to evolve rapidly, Industrial Ethernet has seen significant development and is now widely used in the resource management and execution layers of integrated automation systems in industrial enterprises. It is also gradually extending directly to the industrial control site. Internationally and domestically, Industrial Ethernet has already been extensively applied at the manufacturing execution level and has become the de facto standard. In the future, it will play an even more critical role in connecting and integrating information between field devices in industrial automation systems.

Overall, the development of Industrial Ethernet technology is expected to focus on several key areas:

(1) Integration of Industrial Ethernet with Fieldbus

Although Industrial Ethernet technology has only recently gained attention from industrial control experts globally, fieldbus technology has matured over the past decade and is now widely adopted in the market. While full replacement of fieldbus is still a challenge, further research into new control system architectures based on Industrial Ethernet is essential. This includes developing a range of products that leverage the benefits of Industrial Ethernet for more efficient and scalable control systems.

(2) Direct Application of Industrial Ethernet for Communication Between Field Devices

With increasing Ethernet communication speeds, the advancement of full-duplex communication and switching technologies has laid a solid technical foundation for deterministic Ethernet communication. This has helped eliminate major barriers that previously prevented Ethernet from being directly used in industrial field device communications. As a result, there are now greater technical possibilities for direct Ethernet communication between field devices. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is actively working on developing Real-time Ethernet (RTE) standards to support broader adoption of Ethernet in industrial control environments.

(3) Web-Based Network Monitoring Platforms

Embedded Ethernet has become a popular trend in recent years, allowing all network-connected devices—ranging from computers and PDAs to communication devices, instruments, and household appliances—to interoperate through the Internet. Within enterprises, real-time operational data from factories can be published and displayed across the company’s information network. Administrators can monitor, debug, and diagnose equipment remotely using a web browser, regardless of their physical location. One of the simplest ways to achieve this is by connecting a dedicated Ethernet controller to a control host with a TCP/IP interface and a field device with an RS-232 or RS-485 interface. This Ethernet controller acts as a bridge between general computer networks and the various devices on-site, enabling seamless integration and remote management.
