According to a report by Forbes magazine, Microsoft and its various tech partners are banking on virtual reality (VR) products becoming major hits during the upcoming holiday season. On Monday, Microsoft announced that well-known brands like HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Acer would be launching VR headsets based on the Microsoft Windows operating system just in time for the bustling holiday shopping period.
Accompanying these headsets, Microsoft also revealed that it has been working on its own motion controllers, which are designed to work seamlessly with the new headsets. While Microsoft hasn't explicitly mentioned whether it intends to sell these controllers independently, the integration seems promising for users looking for a more complete VR experience.
In terms of pricing, the newly developed Dell Visor VR headset is expected to retail at around $360 (approximately 2,379 yuan), and if purchased with the accompanying Microsoft motion controllers, the price jumps to $460 (about 3,039 yuan). Although Microsoft has not disclosed further details about other models, Acer had previously stated that its VR headset would be priced at $300 (around 1,982 yuan).
Microsoft also shared that some popular video games will be making their VR debuts on the new headsets. One notable title is Minecraft, which Microsoft acquired for $2.5 billion back in 2014 from developer Mojang. Additionally, a VR version of the first-person shooter game Halo will premiere, though an exact release date remains undisclosed. Kipman, a Microsoft researcher, also mentioned that Steam, a leading platform for VR gaming and applications, will be compatible with the new Windows-based VR headset.
It's worth noting that Steam is closely linked with HTC, a key partner of Valve, the parent company of Steam. HTC's Vive VR headset is one of the most popular choices for accessing VR content through Steam. However, Microsoft's announcement suggests that users won't need a Vive headset to enjoy Steam's vast library of VR games and apps, as the new Windows-based VR headsets will offer compatibility with Steam services.
This development comes amid recent price cuts by competitors such as Facebook and HTC. HTC reduced the price of its Vive headset from $800 to $600, following Facebook's temporary summer sale that dropped the Oculus Rift's price from $600 to $400. Despite these reductions, analysts argue that VR headsets are still far from becoming mainstream due to the high cost of the PCs required to support these devices. Microsoft claims that even budget-friendly computers can handle the $500 Windows-based VR headset.
Nevertheless, Microsoft's recent VR announcement indicates that major tech companies continue to view immersive technology as a lucrative business opportunity, potentially becoming a sought-after holiday gift. As competition heats up and prices stabilize, the future of VR appears to be brightening, with Microsoft poised to play a significant role in shaping this emerging market.
