Mobile phone pressure TV! Samsung becomes the biggest winner in the screen industry

The smartphone industry is experiencing rapid advancements, and this year is set to break new ground, thanks largely to the collective efforts of manufacturers worldwide. According to data from market research firm IHS Markit, over the last seven years, the global annual growth rate of mobile phone screens has averaged 17%, closing the gap with television screens.

This year, the global mobile phone screen market is projected to reach $45.6 billion, surpassing the $41.3 billion for television screens. The quick rise of mobile phone screens has, in turn, impacted the TV screen market, as users are spending more time on their phones rather than watching TV.

The upcoming iPhone 8 will feature an OLED screen.

This year, mobile phone screens are transitioning to OLED technology, particularly with the introduction of the iPhone 8, which is expected to accelerate the maturation of this market. OLED screens offer superior image quality and consume less power compared to traditional LCD screens, making them ideal for smartphones.

While Apple leads the charge, other manufacturers face challenges due to limited OLED screen supplies. Currently, Samsung is the sole major supplier of small and medium-sized OLED panels, resulting in a shortage. As a result, many companies have no choice but to stick with LCD screens. Samsung dominates the mobile OLED screen market with a staggering 99.9% share, and it will likely maintain its leadership position in the near future.

Smartphones currently represent the most critical entry point for digital traffic. It may not take long before they surpass TVs in terms of usage, but as artificial intelligence (AI) matures, fragmented time will once again consolidate, leading to TV regaining prominence. TVs offer a superior viewing experience that mobile phones cannot replicate. I believe this current shift is temporary; as consumers upgrade, their desire for immersive experiences will increasingly favor TV products over mobile phones.
