Wolfson has launched the world's first A/B to D convertible stereo codec. Targeted at mobile phones, MP3 players and wireless headsets, the WM8985 chip integrates a dual-mode headphone driver that dynamically converts between A/B and Class D drives. Class D technology can increase efficiency by up to 70%, while A/B class mode provides additional flexibility for designers.

As Gartner analyst Stephen Ohr pointed out: "Class D amplifiers may only need a small fraction of their rated power to be audible. Just as A/B class amplifiers are a power-saving extension of Class A amplifiers, the whole The industry also wants to see Class D amplifiers as a power-saving extension of Class A/B amplifiers."

This high-performance codec is based on Wolfson's proven 897X platform and includes a built-in audio enhancement DSP for wind noise filters, notch filters, 5-band equalizers and 3D audio. The WM8985 supports up to two differential microphones and analog stereo line inputs, and supports a direct mix of FM radios with two pairs of headphone drivers to support two users on one audio player. An integrated phase-locked loop supports input clocks from 9 to 27 MHz.

The WM8985 is now available in a 32-pin QFN package (compatible with the WM8976/8978) and is priced at $2.24 in quantities of 10,000.
