Experts expect China's 2015 lithium battery capacity to reach 10 billion watt-hours

Ouyang Minggao, the director of the State Key Laboratory of Automotive Safety and Energy in China, said in Shanghai that currently the Chinese market has selected power batteries based on lithium iron phosphate technology. It is estimated that by 2015, the number of electric vehicles will reach 1 million units. The battery capacity will reach 10 billion watts, and the cost of car batteries will be reduced by half. At the same time, it has established the leading technology route for China's next-generation power battery.

He made the above remarks at the summing-up forum of “Directly to the 2030·Expo and the Sustainable Development of the Automotive Industry” jointly held by SAIC and General Motors on October 15th in the Shanghai World Expo Garden. Ouyang Minggao is the head of the Expert Team of the 863 Energy Conservation and New Energy Vehicle Major Project, and is also a member of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” expert group of the automotive industry.

According to this reporter's report at the meeting, the Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Science and Technology are all formulating policies related to new energy vehicles. The “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” for the development of electric vehicle science and technology led by the Ministry of Science and Technology has been formulated. China plans to promote the development of the electric vehicle industry chain, and power batteries, motors, and electronic control have become the core of future development.

Ouyang Minggao said that the convergence of the two major trends of automobile miniaturization and power electrification is the “12th Five-Year Plan” and beyond, and the golden opportunity period for the development of China’s small-scale electric cars. Small electric cars have commercialization potential and technological maturity. The real breakthrough is to use small electric cars as a breakthrough to drive the independent innovation of China's auto industry and the cultivation of emerging industries throughout the industry.

China has reached 10,000 electric vehicle demonstration projects in 2010, but the former battery is still very expensive. Ouyang Minggao believes that the current battery energy ratio is still relatively low, it is difficult to fully meet the needs of mid-size cars, the current focus is still the demonstration under the government subsidies, especially the demonstration focused on public transport. Hybridization still faces challenges in terms of cost performance and other aspects. Fuel cells are still dominated by cutting-edge research in the short term.

On the day of the forum, Hu Maoyuan, chairman of SAIC, stated that SAIC New Energy aimed at the trend of car-powered electric power, and the specific technological development route was driven mainly by electricity. According to the Group's 'Twelfth Five-Year Plan', the target market share of SAIC's new energy vehicles in 2015 will be synchronized with the traditional car's market share of 20%.
