The highly anticipated new iPhone featuring an OLED display is set to hit the market in September. One of the biggest concerns for potential buyers right now is the pricing. Given the current supply constraints, this year’s production numbers are expected to remain relatively low. This could lead to a situation where demand outstrips supply, resulting in a scarcity-driven market. According to some international reports, however, the production of the iPhone 8 is projected to see a significant uptick next year. Industry analysts anticipate that around 200 million iPhones will incorporate OLED screens by 2018.
Mehdi Hosseini, an analyst from Susquehanna Financial, noted that the OLED-equipped iPhone 8 is expected to maintain its shipment volume at approximately 90 million units during the second half of this year. However, Apple plans to ramp up production early next year, boosting the number to around 55 million units. He further predicted that OLED models would account for about 50% of total iPhone shipments this year, with that figure rising to 70% next year.
Hosseini's report also suggests that next year Apple will significantly expand its use of OLED displays across its product lineup. By 2018, it is forecasted that 200 million iPhones will feature OLED technology. All these OLED-equipped iPhones will come equipped with 3D sensing capabilities. In contrast, competitors of Apple may find it challenging to secure similar 3D sensor capacities due to the nascent state of the 3D sensing ecosystem. The practical applications of 3D sensors on smartphones remain unclear until Apple launches the iPhone 8, which will provide more clarity on their utility and potential.
