Microsemi Corporation, a leading provider of high-performance semiconductor technology solutions, has recently expanded its product portfolio by entering the monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC) market. With a strong background in RF and microwave technologies, the company is now offering a range of 16 MMIC products that cover frequencies from DC up to 40GHz. These include wideband amplifiers, low noise amplifiers, and switches, designed for critical applications in defense, communications, instrumentation, and aerospace industries.

Microsemi has been actively developing MMICs using advanced gallium arsenide (GaAs) and emerging gallium nitride (GaN) technologies. According to Strategy Analytics, the GaAs MMIC market in the U.S. defense and communications sectors was expected to reach approximately $500 million in 2015, while ABI Research projected the GaN MMIC market would grow to around $100 million by 2018. This strategic move positions Microsemi as a key player in the evolving RF and microwave landscape.

The company’s MMIC solutions are designed to deliver faster design cycles and more compact system sizes, making them ideal for applications such as electronic warfare (EW), signal intelligence (SIGINT), military communications, and advanced instrumentation. These features help engineers optimize performance while reducing overall system complexity.

Ray Crampton, Director of the MMIC Product Line at Microsemi, stated, “By leveraging our extensive experience in these markets, we work closely with industry-leading customers to develop products that address real-world engineering challenges. We are excited about our initial MMIC offerings and are actively exploring new developments in GaAs and GaN-on-SiC technologies to further expand our product portfolio.”

Key Products in the MMIC Lineup:

  • MMA001AA: A DC-20GHz wideband amplifier with a positive gain slope and over 17dB gain at 20GHz.
  • MMS002AA: A single-pole double-throw switch with approximately 45dB isolation across DC-20GHz.
  • MMA016AA: A DC-15GHz amplifier with selectable power options, allowing users to tailor power consumption based on their specific application needs.
