This circuit uses the common 555 timer IC to create a bistable switch. It offers a simple design, reliable performance, and strong output current, allowing it to directly drive relay-type loads. With just a single touch key, you can control the on/off state of the connected load.
As shown in Figure 1 (click to download the schematic), when the circuit is powered on, the capacitor C1 causes the 6th pin of the 555 IC to receive a positive pulse, resulting in a low level at the 3rd pin. At this moment, there is no voltage across C2. When the touch button S is pressed, the "0" voltage on C2 triggers the 2nd pin of the IC, causing the 3rd pin to switch to a high level and charge C2 through R3. Once S is released, C2 charges up to Vcc, and the 2nd and 6th pins of the IC are biased at 1/2Vcc by R1 and R2, maintaining the high level at the 3rd pin.
When S is pressed again, the voltage on C2 causes the 6th pin of the IC to exceed 2/3Vcc, triggering the 3rd pin to switch back to a low level. After releasing S, C2 discharges through R3 and the IC's 3rd pin. The voltage at the 2nd and 6th pins remains at 1/2Vcc, keeping the 3rd pin in a low state. This means that each time the button is pressed, the 3rd pin alternates between high and low levels.
This bistable switch can toggle the state of the IC’s 3rd pin as long as each press is less than one second. However, if the button is held down continuously, the 3rd pin will keep toggling.
