VR/AR head savior? Retinal laser projection technology enters the commercial stage

When the concept of VR was just emerging, many people thought about whether one day they could get rid of all the screens and use glasses to present the virtual world. It is worth noting that this technology has been developed by Japan's QDLaser and the University of Tokyo's Nano-Quantum Information Electronics Research Institute, which can provide images to users by directly illuminating the retina with laser-deployed images. This technology has won the "Economic Industry Minister Award" from CEATEC JAPAN2016.

Laser Eyewear

The head-mounted display (HMD) "Laser Eyewear" using this principle is still a TOB model, which uses a MEMS three-color laser emitted from a semiconductor laser to be reflected by a MEMS mirror, and then collects light near the pupil through a reflector. Finally, the body is irradiated onto the retina. It is mainly used for medical grade auxiliary purposes. "Laser Eyewear" is scheduled to be launched in Europe at the end of 2016 and is priced at approximately 200,000 yen (equivalent to 1W RMB).

In fact, the way to use the laser to directly draw images on the retina (laser retinal scanning method) has been proposed in the early 1990s. Many companies such as the Japanese Brother Industries have developed, but at the time there were problems such as size and optical technology. Until now, the technology has matured and is moving towards consumer levels.

Compared with the current mainstream HMD, Laser Eyewear has two obvious advantages:

HMD, VR, AR

Small size and simple construction

(1) Small size and simple structure, Laser Eyewear is like a normal frame glasses, only one eye has related equipment, very light, and the difference with the current mainstream HMD is that it does not have a screen problem, which means it does not need Limited to the screen for HMD design.

Imaging principle

(2) No need to focus, no focus is because the optical system has the feature of allowing light to converge near the pupil. Since no matter what state the lens of the eye is in, the light can enter the retina and depict the image, so no matter the user's level of vision, whether it is myopia or presbyopia, a clear image can be obtained. This system can be used as a "visitor". If you use this HMD, you no longer have to put the glasses in it for the VR experience.

However, this system also has shortcomings, that is, the eye position and HMD adjustment requirements are stricter than the liquid crystal method. If the pupil is misaligned with the trajectory of the laser, the light cannot enter the retina, making it impossible for the user to see the image. However, according to the manufacturer, this defect will be used, and finally it will achieve the effect that the user can see when they want to see it.

Monocular peripherals, no screen

QDLaser is a subsidiary of Fujitsu and is principally engaged in the development, manufacture and sale of high-performance semiconductors. The company officially established the Market Promotion Association on October 18, seeking cooperation in various fields including VR/AR entertainment and telemedicine. QDLaser said that it plans to start mass production model production at the end of February 2017 and launch smart glasses business from 2018 to 2019.

So far, many VR hardware manufacturers have some troubles that can't be solved, such as dizziness and excessive quality. Even if the head is zoomed out and then streamlined, the screen can't be changed, and the resulting series of problems can't be solved. We can see that the HMD using retinal scanning is relatively light, and the VR head will definitely take the lightweight route in the future. VR is still in the ascendant period, and the true appearance of VR heads in the future is still not fixed, and it requires constant exploration by each practitioner.
