In the realm of integrated circuits, some manufacturers have combined FPGA with a CPU to leverage the strengths of both. While FPGAs excel in parallel processing, CPUs are better at system management—a gap that FPGAs traditionally lack. However, instead of integrating a CPU, Gaoyun chose to pair its FPGA with an MCU (microcontroller unit). According to Zhu Xihui, this decision was strategic: ARM architecture dominates the MCU market, and combining it with FPGA can enhance competitiveness. Moreover, the embedded market offers vast potential, and by using FPGA+MCU, Gaoyun aims to target high-end applications and carve out a new niche. In the consumer sector, chips embedded with features like USB 2.0 are expected to expand into areas such as surveillance, smart manufacturing, and medical devices. The dynamic reconfigurability and continuous improvement of single-chip clusters will make FPGAs even more powerful. For example, in servo motor controllers, the integration of these chips allows for more compact control systems, precise motor step control, enhanced display effects, and more user-friendly human-machine interfaces. To address security concerns, Gaoyun’s chip introduces advanced encryption technology. Reverse engineering and cloning are major threats in the semiconductor industry, as attackers can strip layers of a chip and attempt to replicate its structure. However, Gaoyun’s GW1N series uses 55nm and 28nm processes, making reverse cloning costly and technically challenging. As Chen Tiancheng, chairman of Gaoyun Semiconductor, explained, at smaller process nodes like 90nm, the transistor size becomes comparable to light wavelengths, leading to diffraction issues that complicate replication. With advancements like 55nm and 40nm, cloning becomes even less feasible. Additionally, the chip includes a self-destruct mechanism to protect user designs. If unauthorized access is detected, the chip can erase sensitive data, similar to how an ATM machine sprays ink on cash if tampered with. This ensures that the user's design remains secure and private. The new chip is a non-volatile FPGA based on flash memory technology. Unlike traditional OTP (one-time programmable) FPGAs from companies like Lattice, Gaoyun’s chip allows multiple programming cycles, offering greater flexibility and reusability. As Chen Tiancheng noted, this type of product can now fully replace traditional CPLDs (complex programmable logic devices), which have a market value of around $500 million annually. With its advanced features and security capabilities, Gaoyun’s FPGA is well-positioned to lead in the evolving semiconductor landscape.
