Molex has recently launched the EXTreme OrthoPowerâ„¢ quadrature direct-power connector system, specifically designed to deliver power directly to backplane line cards in network and telecommunications applications. This innovative system utilizes a dedicated power card that provides 30.0A of in-and-out routing power per line card, with a total of 60.0A per module through split-blade technology.
Rich Benson, Molex's new product development manager, highlighted the growing importance of direct power solutions in response to market demands for higher system speeds and cost-effective designs. He noted that OEM designers often face challenges related to space constraints and board routing limitations, particularly when it comes to powering line cards. The EXTreme OrthoPower connector offers a practical solution by being mounted on a dedicated power card, which delivers power directly to each line card.
This is the first direct-power quadrature-configured connector from Molex, offering significant cost savings by eliminating the need for separate quadrature backplane connectors. The EXTreme OrthoPower connectors feature reliable power contacts and a sturdy steering system that ensures proper mechanical alignment during patching. The system also includes a durable quadrature housing, drawing on the proven design of
other Molex power connectors such as the EXTreme LPH Powerâ„¢ and EXTreme Ten60 Powerâ„¢ systems.
Benson further emphasized that the direct power quadrature architecture reduces the number of components required for power routing, leading to lower costs and better support for OEMs designing larger power products with compact packaging requirements.
