Molex recently launched the EXTreme OrthoPowerâ„¢ quadrature direct-power connector system, specifically designed to deliver power directly to backplane line cards in network and telecommunications applications. This innovative system utilizes a dedicated power card to provide 30.0A of in-and-out routing power per line card, with a total of 60.0A per module through its advanced split-blade technology.
Rich Benson, Molex's new product development manager, stated, "As the market demands higher system speeds and cost-effective solutions, direct power is becoming increasingly essential. OEM designers are constantly challenged by space limitations and board routing constraints, especially when it comes to powering line cards. The EXTreme OrthoPower connector can be mounted on a dedicated power card, allowing for direct power delivery to each line card."
As the first direct-power quadrature-configured connector, the Molex EXTreme OrthoPower system helps reduce costs by eliminating the need for separate quadrature backplane connectors. These connectors feature reliable power contacts and a strong alignment system for accurate mechanical positioning during patching. The design builds upon Molex’s proven power connector platforms, including the EXTreme LPH Power™ and EXTreme Ten60 Power™ systems, ensuring durability and performance.
Benson added, "By minimizing the number of components used in power routing, the direct power quadrature architecture not only reduces costs but also addresses the design challenges faced by OEMs working on larger power products that require compact packaging."
