Atmel launches a complete digital audio platform for consumer applications

Atmel® CorporaTIon, a leading manufacturer of microcontrollers and touch solutions, announced the launch of a comprehensive digital audio platform for consumer products, automotive and industrial applications. Atmel Digital Audio Platform provides OEM manufacturers of audio equipment and mobile accessories with a comprehensive hardware and firmware solution, greatly simplifying the task of designing high-quality digital audio equipment. This new digital audio platform is implemented using Atmel's AVR® UC3 microcontroller and is customized for audio applications such as smart phones and media player docking stations.

The digital audio platform integrates a dedicated microcontroller, evaluation tool suite and firmware IP. Firmware IP includes a variety of control and streaming interfaces for popular smartphones and portable media players and MP3, WMA, and AAC decoders to allow designers to decode compressed music files; the platform also includes a USB protocol stack, and a Allows designers to find a comprehensive file system for mass storage devices such as USB flash drives or SD cards. The new platform's firmware IP uses a ready-to-go commercial licensing model that allows designers to keep their firmware codes confidential, which is different from many current audio license agreements that require open firmware codes. The digital audio platform is suitable for applications such as docking stations, USB mass storage, SD card playback, car audio, USB speakers, microphones, and various voice and music devices. Other applications include mobile accessories (accessories connected to smartphones or tablets) using the same basic technology.

This digital audio platform has all the advantages of Atmel's AVR UC3 microcontroller, providing designers with a system with the highest performance and lowest power. The AVR UC3 microcontroller also supports Atmel ’s QTouch® software library, which can easily implement stylish and special capacitive touch ammonium keys, slider control buttons, and turntable user interfaces.

Ingar Fredriksen, senior director of AVR products at Atmel said: "In the past, the design of digital audio applications has been a complex and difficult task. You need to find the required firmware IP, obtain a license, and finally integrate it into the work application. To help designers accelerate the development of audio applications, the digital audio platform is also equipped with an evaluation tool kit (EVK). This kit includes an evaluation board with Atmel ’s AVR microcontroller and free downloadable source code.
