With the rapid development of Ethernet and communication technologies, Industrial Ethernet has seen significant growth and is now widely applied in the resource management and execution layers of integrated automation systems in industrial enterprises. It is also gradually moving down to the industrial control site, bringing more efficiency and connectivity. As the technology evolves, Industrial Ethernet is becoming the standard for manufacturing execution systems and will play an even more critical role in connecting field devices within industrial automation systems.

Currently, the trend in Industrial Ethernet development can be observed in several key areas:

(1) Integration of Industrial Ethernet with Fieldbus

Although Industrial Ethernet has only recently gained attention from control experts, fieldbus technology has matured over the past decade and is now widely adopted in the market. However, replacing fieldbus entirely remains a challenge. Ongoing research focuses on developing new control architectures based on Industrial Ethernet and creating products that leverage its capabilities to enhance system performance and flexibility.

(2) Direct Use of Industrial Ethernet for Device Communication

As Ethernet speeds increase and full-duplex communication and switching technologies advance, they provide a solid foundation for deterministic Ethernet communication. This makes it possible to use Ethernet directly for communication between industrial field devices. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is actively working on Real-time Ethernet (RTE) standards to enable broader adoption of Ethernet in industrial control applications.

(3) Web-Based Network Monitoring Platforms

Embedded Ethernet has become a major focus in recent years, allowing all networked devices—ranging from computers and PDAs to instrumentation and household appliances—to communicate seamlessly via the Internet. Within an enterprise, real-time data from the factory floor can be published and accessed through the company’s information network. Administrators can monitor, debug, and diagnose devices remotely using a web browser, improving operational efficiency and reducing downtime. One of the simplest ways to achieve this is by using an Ethernet controller that connects a control host with a TCP/IP interface to field devices equipped with RS-232 or RS-485 interfaces. This controller acts as a bridge between the general network and the devices on-site, enabling seamless integration and remote access.
