Volkswagen plans to build 2,800 electric vehicle charging stations in the United States in 2019

On December 19, Netease Technology News reported that Volkswagen has committed to building a nationwide network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the United States. According to Reuters, the company’s U.S. branch plans to install 2,800 EV charging stations across 17 major cities by 2019. The project is expected to cost around $2 billion, with California set to receive nearly half of the funding. This move marks a significant step for Volkswagen as it tries to regain public trust and strengthen its presence in the American EV market.

While $2 billion might sound like a large sum, it pales in comparison to the financial losses Volkswagen has already faced. As of February this year, the automaker had already spent over $20 billion to resolve its diesel emissions scandal, which rocked the industry and led to massive fines and recalls worldwide.

In contrast, Tesla has been aggressively expanding its Supercharger network. In April, the company announced that it aims to have 10,000 Superchargers by the end of the year. It took five years to reach 5,400 stations, but Tesla is now accelerating its efforts, planning to increase the number from 9,000 to 15,000 this year. The first of its new Superchargers went live in November, signaling a strong push into the fast-charging segment.

Despite these achievements, Tesla is not without its challenges. The company has struggled to meet demand for its Model 3, particularly the more affordable $35,000 version. Production delays have caused frustration among customers and investors alike, highlighting the growing pains of scaling up manufacturing while maintaining quality and timelines.

As both companies continue to invest heavily in the future of electric mobility, the competition between traditional automakers and tech-driven startups is heating up. With governments pushing for cleaner transportation and consumers increasingly interested in sustainability, the race to dominate the EV market is far from over.
