A few days ago, the supercomputer "Ï€" system went online at Shanghai Jiaotong University and will support high-end scientific research projects such as the inertially constrained nuclear fusion project commonly known as the "artificial sun."
According to reports, "Ï€" system peak performance reached 263 trillion times, ranking 158th in the latest global TOP500 list. The system is designed and built by Inspur. The system will focus on supporting the teaching and scientific research of Shanghai Jiaotong University and will become the supercomputing core support platform of "IFSA Inertial Constraint Fusion Science and Application Collaborative Innovation Center".
At present, inertial constrained fusion is a worldwide scientific and technological challenge. Half a century ago, scientists have discovered that when deuterium and tritium atoms fuse into a helium nucleus and a neutron, they release huge amounts of energy. Because its energy release mechanism is the same as that of the sun, the project is commonly known as "artificial sun".
Chen Min, a special researcher of the Key Laboratory of Laser Plasma of the Ministry of Education of Shanghai Jiaotong University and the winner of the National Youth Thousand Talents Program, said that the inertial confinement fusion reaction process is very complicated. The pressure during the reaction is equivalent to 1 trillion standard atmospheric pressure, deuterium and tritium will be compressed to only one thousandth of the volume of the same mass of liquid, but the reaction time is only up to 10 billionths of a second. With such an extreme response, it is difficult for existing experimental detection methods to go deep into the fusion fuel for measurement. Using supercomputer simulation, you can simulate each process step by step and study the physical details, which is greatly conducive to the analysis and understanding of the design of the experimental device and the experimental results.
