Clearwire will test WiMAX 2 mobile broadband technology from next year

Operator Clearwire announced that it will start testing higher-speed mobile broadband technology WiMAX 2 from next year. Preparations for technical facilities and hardware terminals have already begun this year.

WiMAX 2 is based on the 802.16m technical specifications and can provide 120 Mbps downlink and 60 Mbps uplink speed. It is implemented using 4x2 MIMO antennas, which is twice as much as the current WiMAX technology. Clearwire CTO John Saw said that the company has not placed WiMAX 2 testing at the highest priority, and the technology may not be commercially available until 2012.

Previously, the Russian operator Yota had a plan to test 802.16m at the end of this year, and the hardware partner was Samsung, South Korea.

Another feature of WiMAX 2 is that it uses a more efficient 20MHz frequency to replace the current 10MHz band.
