Silicon Labs seizes smart grid business opportunities

Electronic enthusiasts news: Due to the development of new energy, smart grid has received great attention in China and even the world. Especially in the big market of China, the smart grid is a huge cake. As the key to the smart grid, the performance of smart meters is particularly important. According to the market research company IHS report: by the end of 2016, the global smart meter installation will double. IHS said that as of the end of 2011, of the 1.43 billion meters installed worldwide, those with "smart" communication capabilities accounted for less than 18%. And these meters include not only the old one-way advanced meter reading system (AMR), but also meters with general packet radio service (GPRS) functions, as well as residential smart meters that can provide two-way communication.

According to IHS forecast, with the launch of European advanced electricity meter projects, global advanced electricity meter shipments will surge in 2015. The growth of the global smart meter market depends on developing economies, so China is the most important market for smart meters. As a solution provider of smart grid related products, Silicon Labs has developed related businesses in China very early on with its technological advantages and achieved good results. In order to uncover the way that Silicon Labs is winning the market, the electronic enthusiast network interviewed Diwakar Vishakhadatta, vice president and general manager of the embedded system business department from Silicon Labs, and shared his views.

Optimistic about the smart grid Chinese market is the key core

When referring to how Silicon Labs views the smart grid market, Mr. Vishakhadatta said that the Chinese government's key support for the development of smart grids is a very good signal. Not only because of policy support, but also because of the inevitable advantages of the development of smart grids, it will inevitably lead to the progress of smart meters, and smart grid technologies such as smart meters can not only provide the public utility market with improved reliability, accuracy, safety, and processing There are many benefits such as complex bills; at the same time, smart meters also provide energy consumers with the opportunity to effectively manage their energy consumption, which can reduce their energy costs.

Since the smart grid has so many advantages, and there is also important national support, it is inevitable to develop the smart grid. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the Chinese market is so huge, and Silicon Labs has a strong technical advantage. The two complement each other, and Silicon Labs has set its sights on this big market.

The reason why the smart grid is supported is its safety, energy saving and simplicity. In the field of energy saving, the design of smart meters is very demanding. To obtain market recognition, efficient energy saving is required. So, what technical advantages does Silicon Labs rely on to seize the big market in China? Diwakar gave us three major killer tips:

The first is its high-efficiency and low-power components. Silicon Labs will continue to provide a variety of mixed-signal IC products to fully assist smart meters in communications, sensing, calibration, timing, processing, and safety and reliability. . Its IC products are optimized for smart meters, including 2.4GHz Ember ZigBee SoC, wireless devices, ultra-low power 8-bit C8051F9xx MCU, 32-bit Precision32 MCU, and high-performance digital isolators.

Diwakar specifically mentioned Silicon Labs' high-performance MCU. With high-performance 8-bit MCUs based on the 8051 architecture, Silicon Labs has demonstrated outstanding leadership in smart energy applications in the Chinese market. At the same time, Silicon Labs Precision32 MCU series based on the ARM Cortex-M3 processor entered the 32-bit MCU market last year. This Precision32 series includes the new ultra-low-power SiM3L1xx MCU that has been designed to provide the industry ’s highest energy efficiency for 32-bit embedded system designs, and provides ultra-low power and longer batteries for a variety of green energy applications Life time, and these applications include smart meters and home energy monitoring systems. The introduction of Precision32 products has significantly expanded Silicon Labs' potential development space in the Chinese market, while 32-bit embedded designs for smart electrical energy in China are rapidly developing.

Second, merge and acquire companies and cooperate with multiple companies to provide more competitive products. Silicon Labs acquired the industry-leading 2.4GHz ZigBee solution provider Ember in July 2012. This strategic acquisition completes Silicon Labs' mixed-signal MCU and wireless solutions, while providing Silicon Labs with a new way to expand its wireless business in the Chinese market.

As the Ember ZigBee solution is added to Silicon Labs' wireless product portfolio, they have enhanced their ability to deal with a variety of different loT (Internet of Things) applications, and the smart meter solution in this article belongs to this type of application.

Diwakar specifically pointed out that Silicon Labs is now a leading supplier in China's advanced meter basis (AMI) application market. They provide wireless home area networks that connect temperature controllers and other home systems to smart meters or gateways ( HAN), and brings together thousands of product family meters and sends the information back to the community area network (NAN) of the utility supplier. Silicon Labs' Ember ZigBee and wireless chip products provide wireless connectivity solutions for smart meter products of AMI industry leaders. These companies include Landis + Gyr, Elster, Itron, Nuri Telecom and China's Holi Instruments.

Third, it is to promote low-cost, high-efficiency SOC solutions, while reducing costs, reducing the design complexity, the number of components used, and material costs.

Diwakar said that Silicon Labs' Ember ZigBee EM35x series SoCs represent one of the industry's first system-on-chip solutions designed specifically for smart grid applications that require wireless mesh network connections. As the industry's first ZigBee SoC devices based on ARM processors, EM35x devices not only provide superior wireless performance, extremely low power consumption and high code density in a small package, but also integrate a 2.4GHz IEEE802.15.4 wireless Transceiver, ARM Cortex-M3 core, flash memory up to 192kB and 12kB RAM. This EM35x device SoC can be used in low-cost, low-power sensor networks and other simple connected devices, or configured as a network coprocessor in complex applications running high-performance application processors.

Thanks to its high level of integration on a single chip, SoC solutions like EM35x will still maintain their reputation without exceptions in challenging applications such as smart meters.
