Molex Introduces Micro-SIM Card Socket for Ultra-Small Consumer Electronics

Molex Corporation, a leading global provider of complete interconnect products, announced the launch of two push-pull and six-channel push-pull devices designed for ultra-slim smart phones, tablet PCs, GSM/UMTS modems and PC cards. 8-way micro-SIM card socket series. The Molex 78727 series receptacles are 1.40 mm high with a detection switch; the 78646 series is 1.45 mm high with no detection switch.

One of the outstanding features of Molex's micro-SIM card sockets is a built-in, short-circuit proof design. The 78646 Series Sockets feature a housing design that limits lateral movement of the SIM card after insertion to prevent short circuits. The 78727 series sockets raise the plastic wall to form a touch-proof barrier to isolate the metal housing of the inserted SIM card and socket.

The 78727 series sockets have a card bias feature that prevents the micro-SIM card from being inserted in the wrong direction. This series of sockets also has a detection switch that detects when the card is fully inserted. The 78646 series sockets have chamfered edge marks that can help correct the micro-SIM card insertion direction.

Jason Foo, Senior Product Marketing Engineer, Molex Commercial Products Division, pointed out: "Consumer space continues to demand smaller communication devices, including smartphones and tablets, and the micro-SIM specification is part of this design evolution. The new micro-SIM family offers The optimized value-added socket solution has a wealth of advanced designs, including short-circuit prevention features, detection switches, and card position bias to ensure that the SIM card is properly inserted. The plug-in features of these plug-in products are built-in.

The round terminals of the two socket series provide excellent electrical contact performance, while the progressively inserted reverse terminal design enables smooth card insertion and ejection. In the two socket series, the total number of soldered points for each socket is 14 to achieve a firm PCB crimp.

Both the 78646 and 78727 series sockets feature an LCP housing that can withstand high temperatures and have a wide “finger” area for push-pull operation of the SIM card. The new socket meets RoHS and ELV directive requirements.
