8K penetration rate rises to 9% in 2020 8K era is coming

In 2018, the commercialization of 8K displays began to take shape, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of television technology. Large-screen TVs, particularly those over 60 inches, started integrating 8K resolution panels, signaling a gradual shift from the dominant 4K (UHD) market. This transition is expected to accelerate over the next few years as more consumers embrace higher-resolution content.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics served as a major platform for 8K broadcasting, further boosting the demand for high-resolution displays. TVs with screen sizes of 60 inches or larger are now setting new industry standards, with 8K resolution becoming a key selling point. From 4K (3840x2160) to 8K (7680x4320), panel manufacturers like AUO and Innolux were among the first to launch 8K TV panels, according to IHS Display data. This year, 8K penetration in the 60-inch TV segment reached approximately 1%, and it is projected to rise to 9% by 2020, with continued growth expected beyond that.

Major brands such as Sony and Samsung have also entered the 8K market, incorporating 120Hz 8K panels from suppliers like AUO, Innolux, and SD. These advancements not only enhance visual quality but also set the stage for future innovations in display technology.

Although 4K remains the standard for most large TVs today, the shift toward 8K is gaining momentum. With panel manufacturers ramping up production in 2018, 8K TVs began appearing in the second half of the year. By 2020, the 8K panel penetration rate in the 60+ inch TV market is expected to reach 9%, rising to 19% by 2024. Meanwhile, the share of 4K panels is anticipated to drop to 81%, reflecting the growing consumer preference for ultra-high-definition content.

According to IHS Display, TV manufacturers are actively replacing their 4K product lines with 8K models, driven by the need for differentiation and profit sustainability. This strategic move highlights the industry's push toward higher-resolution displays as a competitive advantage.

Innolux introduced its 8K panel last year, producing 65-inch 60Hz models in the fourth quarter. These panels are primarily supplied to Sharp and Chinese TV brands, while Sharp itself also supplies 70-inch 8K panels for its own TVs and mainland manufacturers. Meanwhile, Sony and Samsung have joined the race, incorporating 8K panels in their flagship models, including 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch sizes.

BOE and China Panda are also planning to start developing 8K TV panels later this year. LGD, on the other hand, is focusing on OLED-based 8K displays. While current 60Hz 8K panels use an a-Si process, future 120Hz versions will rely on oxide technology, which offers better performance, energy efficiency, and scalability.
