The four major airlines gather! Air China Officially Opens Its Mobile Phone

In the wake of China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, and China Southern Airlines relaxing their policies on portable electronic devices (PEDs), the last major Chinese carrier—China International Airlines (Air China)—has finally followed suit. This marks a significant shift in aviation regulations across the country, as all four leading airlines now allow passengers to use certain electronic gadgets during flights. Starting from noon on January 21, 2018, Beijing Time, Air China officially permitted the use of PEDs on its flights, provided they comply with specific safety guidelines. This means that in the near future, travelers can enjoy a more connected and comfortable flying experience, whether they're watching a movie, reading an e-book, or simply passing time on their phone. The new policy is not without restrictions. For security reasons, certain devices are still prohibited throughout the entire flight. These include items like mobile phones or satellite phones that lack a transmit power logo, mobile Wi-Fi routers, intercom systems, drone remote controls, and remote-controlled toys. Additionally, during critical flight phases such as taxiing, takeoff, and landing, all electronic devices must be turned off. However, there are exceptions. Devices such as unlicensed brand portable oxygen concentrators (POCs), laptops, and tablets are allowed during non-critical phases. Moreover, medical devices like pacemakers, hearing aids, and certified POCs or CPAP machines can be used throughout the flight without restriction. Passengers may also use small handheld devices such as smartphones, e-readers, video players, or gaming consoles—provided they switch them to airplane mode and disable cellular communication. During critical flight phases, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth should be turned off, and no external accessories like headphones, charging cables, or data connections should be used. In the event that the pilot detects any interference from a PED, they have the authority to ask passengers to turn off their devices immediately. This is to ensure the safety of the aircraft's navigation and communication systems, especially during low-visibility operations or emergency situations. With this update, Air China has joined the growing trend of allowing greater flexibility for passengers while maintaining strict safety protocols. It’s a welcome change for frequent flyers who now have more freedom to stay entertained and connected during their journeys.
