A recent analysis highlights the rapid growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) market in healthcare, driven by rising demand for advanced medical services and increasing patient acceptance of AI-driven solutions. The report predicts that the AI healthcare market will reach $6 billion within the next three years, signaling a major shift in how medical care is delivered and managed.
At the HIMSS18 conference, consulting firm Accenture released a detailed report showing that the AI healthcare market is expected to grow from $600 million in 2014 to over $6.6 billion by 2021. This exponential growth reflects the growing integration of AI into various aspects of the healthcare system, from diagnostics to treatment and patient engagement.
Dr. Kaveh Safavi, a senior leader at Accenture’s health practice, emphasized that patients are now more engaged with digital tools and expect greater control over their healthcare experiences. “Consumers are demanding technology that allows them to manage their care on their own terms—when, where, and how they want it,†he said.
Accenture’s survey of over 3,000 consumers found that one in five U.S. patients already uses AI-based healthcare services, such as virtual assistants, robotic systems, or smart diagnostic tools. This trend is not just limited to tech-savvy individuals but is becoming mainstream as more people recognize the benefits of AI in improving access and efficiency.
Beyond consumer adoption, many companies and venture capital firms are investing heavily in AI innovation within healthcare. This aligns with a broader industry shift from volume-based care to value-based care, where the focus is on delivering the right treatment at the right time and place, ensuring better outcomes and cost efficiency.
Health insurance giants like Anthem and Cigna are using AI to monitor and reduce the misuse of opioids and powerful painkillers. Meanwhile, UnitedHealth Group’s Optum Ventures has launched a $250 million fund to support digital health startups, including Buoy Health. Their AI-powered platform helps patients identify symptoms and receive guidance on next steps, making healthcare more accessible and informed.
Regulatory bodies are also moving quickly to approve AI-based medical technologies. For instance, Bionik Laboratories has developed seven robotic products, three of which have received FDA approval. These devices are currently used in over 200 hospitals across 20 countries to treat neurological conditions, showcasing the real-world impact of AI in clinical settings.
Eric Dusseux, CEO of Bionik Laboratories, believes that AI will continue to transform healthcare and beyond. “Our society has always relied on technology to improve efficiency and quality. As AI advances—especially through machine learning and brain-computer interfaces—it will play an even greater role in reshaping how we diagnose, treat, and manage health conditions,†he said.
